Hot and Heavy Confusion

Because Life can Suck and be extremely confusing. With an infinite amount of directions hitting my mind and collecting in all sorts of mysterious ways, it is heavy and it is hot. For life is full of overlapping loves and the Disney holy one way story just doesn’t exist for everyone.

May you find peace at points if not all the time!

A harsh little truth…

harsh truth

Not that harsh in the grand scheme of things! But reality bites and artists can’t live off joy alone. Well, I could live out of a bin and in an abandoned house, but that can get tiresome. May the fruits of your labour be sold for a good price, enough for you to keep on working on the garden and being able to afford washing powder.

Content over Style

content over style

For a long time I wrestled with style as an Illustrator and Artist. I wrestled with my outputs of creativity such as music and art. Trying to find a  way that fit me. This went on until I was confronted by a dear friend of mine (and incredible artist) Jacob V Joyce who reminded me; the most important aspect is; what you say.

I have a sense that style has become so important in our artistic world, that the content takes a back stage. A simple aesthetic look is enough to please the eyes. But are we not meant to be saying something important and as long as we are saying it clearly, isn’t this enough? Not with the competition one faces today as a picture maker!

Perhaps the title of this blog has dual meanings. Perhaps I am simply Content with my style and thus wishing to forget about it. Perhaps I simply feel confident with my visual language and now just want to speak.

Practice makes Perfect

The picture says it all really. But it’s true ey? If there has been one thing I have learnt from all this creative stuff it is practice makes you better! Once I used to sculpt out of wood, and if I had carried that on I would be much better at it now! If I had carried on practising classical piano I would be much better at it!

But it is thought that perfection will never be truly attained even if you practice something for eternity. For eternity one would continue to make mistakes! Well, if I keep on drawing for a good 700 years then I will be pretty good I can’t deny that, but there will be some other out there in this universe who has done it for 1o00 years. Bugger. Wise words can be added here from my favourite band ‘ Screaming Toenail’…

“Teach your self to FAIL!”

It’s not a competition though ey? It is a journey we can take on together and help each other on. I hate all this greedy capitalistic art competition.

Drawing touches something sacred in me and I can’t quite get it down onto a blog page.

Friggin Fridged

yes!Ok, last post of the day. Even if I am just talking to my self, it is good to note this down. This is a visual response to my first post about style and instruments. Lesson learnt.. Don’t be so friggin fridgid and use them all! It is a joy to create and it is a true joy to use colour and line! Just like it is to spew sound out of  a guitar! It is all so similar and it is so obsessive of me to try and reduce my self to a nominal outlet. This capitalist society thinks we should all be highly good at just one thing. I think we are missing some important aspects there however….

Having a wiked time, healing, enjoying the process of development and exploration.

Good night fellow creatures or what ever you are or are not.

My So/un

sc0006My sun is like the sun to me,

He shines right through my sadness.

Just to look at him is a way to bring me through a rain of heavy fall.

My son is like the sun to me,

He is a joy, you can hear it in his voice.

His mum helped him with that and so did I abit.

May I not pass down hot potatoes of my sodden sicknesses,

But the light that I have picked up along my journeys.

May they know that I will always love them.

Styles and instruments

So many different ways to paint a picture and so many different instruments that one can use! You could use a paint brush and load it up with thick gloss red paint. This could be splashed over a fresh white wall. That would be fun! You could paint a picture with words, with film, with sound even. But what is it that one is trying to represent? Are we trying to communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings to each other? Are we spreading love and joy? Or are you trying to develop a STYLE in which people can use to sell or illustrate their ideas or products? I am trying to do that. I am trying desperately to hold onto my integrity and do something I love and believe in, but at the same time and forcing my self into a box of style; Only use this pen, this type of paint and this kind of imagary! Only colour in this way and only hold this type of energy. Make pictures that look reallly nice but hold no meaning.

I just don’t get it! I never thought about my tools when I was a kid and used to draw, I just did it with what I had. Now I have so many tools in my hands I can’t decide on which ones to use! So in the end I flit about doing nothing with either. So long to my wax crayons? But they are so fun! I wish I could have less tools and more time because then maybe I would find life easier. I am looking for that technique that the big shots will love and I don’t think that I have hit it. Maybe I should say F'[08 off to style and remember that the idea is the most important thing. The content is what is the most important… Not the tools and the look. The content is what matters! What matters is that I get my ideas out!! Not how they come out! It has to be quick and easy and understandable. It has to be fun and the technique has to help me express what it is I am expressing. Water and inks help me with excitment because they are liquids and have lives of their own. I love the life of the instrument as that is what makes it more exciting.
